  5. Place a Dutch oven or large skillet over medium heat and melt the butter. Add the onions, salt, and pepper, and cook for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. When the onion gets soft and fragrant, stir in crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, basil, oregano, sugar, and the cooled roasted tomatoes.

  6. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to medium-low. Simmer uncovered for 45 minutes and stir often.
