From pricing to menus, we take a closer look at two meal kit industry pioneers: PeachDish vs. Blue Apron.
PeachDish was founded in 2013, in Atlanta, to deliver the comfort of southern cuisine with the convenience of a meal kit service. Sadly, it has since ceased trading. Blue Apron, on the other hand, was one of the first meal kit delivery services on the US market and has maintained its status as one of the top companies since then.
Given that one of these vendors is still around and the other isn't, it's clear who will be the winner, but we’ve broken down the details for you:

PeachDish was only in business for around six years, so it didn’t have long to expand its dietary options. That being said, it did an excellent job of providing the fundamental nutritional choices, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free meals with meat and seafood options.
Although Blue Apron entered the market early on, it’s only recently started to offer more dietary options. Now customers can choose from a range of categories, including Vegetarian and Wellness.
Additionally, Blue Apron offers nutritionist-designed WW-Approved recipes created to be carb-conscious. It also has a range of Diabetes-Friendly meals, which meet the ADA's Nutrition Guidance. Both plans are a significant step up from what it had offered in the past.
While neither companies are exemplary when it comes to catering to dietary preferences, Blue Apron definitely takes the lead by proving that it’s willing to accommodate specific diets based on customer feedback.
Winner: Blue Apron
A particularly unique feature of PeachDish was that it allowed you to decide between classic southern meals or more worldly cuisines. Because some of these recipes could be more complex than other meal kit services, the weekly menu tended to be more limited. PeachDish offered nine recipes to choose from each week, six of which were swapped weekly, and a further two seasonally.
Blue Apron also doesn’t have the widest variety in terms of weekly recipes, but it’s still more competitive than PeachDish was. With 12 dishes to choose from weekly, Blue Apron increases its variety by allowing you to choose between multiple proteins, including fish and the plant-based Beyond Meat.
Needless to say, Blue Apron wins yet again. Choose from a good variety of meals each week with plenty of global influences, including Tofu Banh Mi or Middle Eastern-Style Beef Pitas.
Winner: Blue Apron
Both PeachDish and Blue Apron charge for shipping. Delivery from PeachDish cost anywhere up to $15 for subscribers and up to $27 for guest customers, depending on the state you lived in. With Blue Apron, you’re looking at $7.99 a week for shipping, unless you order three meals or more per week, in which case it’s free.
The free shipping on larger orders is an excellent incentive. I’d definitely consider the number of meals I’m ordering if I knew I could get free shipping with three or more dishes each week.
When you compare the prices for each service, those subscribed to Blue Apron’s Signature For 4, ordering four meals per week, will pay $7.49 per serving. The same number of servings and meals per week at PeachDish would have cost $12.50 per serving. That would have amounted to $200 a week with PeachDish, plus anywhere up to $15 for delivery, depending on your location. At Blue Apron, the weekly total is $119.84.
Similarly, for its two-person plans and just two meals per week, PeachDish customers would have paid $12.50 per serving plus shipping. At Blue Apron, the price is $4.00 per serving plus a $7.99 shipping fee, which means Blue Apron wins again in terms of pricing.
Not only is the price per serving significantly cheaper at Blue Apron, but the shipping options seem to be better, too.
Winner: Blue Apron
Since PeachDish is no longer in business, it was difficult to find details on its delivery options, though – like Blue Apron – it was a company that operated across the contiguous US. On the other hand, Blue Apron provided me with the option of Tuesday through Sunday, based on my location and preferences.
In terms of packaging, PeachDish was known for being ornately organized. The delivery box came with ingredients separated into colorful organza bags. I found this to be a nice touch since the bags were reusable.
Blue Apron’s packaging is not quite as aesthetically pleasing but it’s efficient and gets the job done nicely. The company packages everything together in one unlabeled box. Small items, such as spices, come in separate bags, but otherwise, all ingredients are entirely unsorted.
Despite the time it takes to sort through the ingredients, I appreciate Blue Apron’s minimalist packaging in terms of environmental impact. There is minimal waste and the company is partnered with How2Recycle to implement its recycling label program.
With six-day delivery options and environmentally conscious packaging, this round also goes to Blue Apron.
Winner: Blue Apron
Since PeachDish is no longer in business, it’s not possible to examine current recipes and the amount of time they took to prep and cook. From my research, it looks like PeachDish’s offerings were a bit more complex and could take hours. While it's a nice idea to be able to learn and develop your culinary skills, that’s not always what customers are looking for when they sign up for a meal kit delivery service.
Blue Apron is more like a traditional meal kit service, in that it’s aimed towards quick and convenient meals. All ingredients in your Blue Apron box can be prepped and cooked for the entire week in less than two hours, with an average cook time of 30 minutes per recipe. Some recipes can even be made in as little as 15 to 25 minutes, like the Zesty Shrimp & Bucatini Pasta with Bell Pepper.
PeachDish might have been a good option for you if you were looking to impress with chef-inspired comfort-food dishes. However, when I turn to meal kit services, I’m looking for convenience. For this reason, Blue Apron is my winner in terms of meal prep.
Winner: Blue Apron
It’s pretty clear to see who the winner is between PeachDish and Blue Apron. First and foremost, it’s important to note that PeachDish is no longer in business. Even beyond that, Blue Apron seems to be the clear winner when comparing the two in-depth.
PeachDish might have been a good option for anyone looking for more comfort-food recipes inspired by southern cuisine, but it’s no longer available. Blue Apron, however, covers a wide range of recipes, with the occasional southern dish on the menu, like its Southern Chicken & Creamy Relish with Sautéed Snow Peas & Rice.
Blue Apron has successfully maintained its position as one of the top meal kit services. It shows in its wide variety of dietary preferences, weekly menu options, and competitive pricing.
Not only is Blue Apron my recommendation in this comparison, but it also made it into our list of the Best Meal Delivery Services.
