Carla King - Director of Marketing for Mary’s Gone Crackers, gives DeliveryRank a brief glimpse into the world of organic, gluten-free, non-GMO crackers packed with grains and seeds, goodness and yumminess.
It all started with Mary Walden, who was diagnosed with celiac disease. Restaurants would present her with bread that she could, of course, not enjoy. She started experimenting in her kitchen and created these amazing crackers packed with seeds and grains. She started selling them at her local convenience store down the road and started sharing them with local celiac organizations. They became so popular that her friends recommended she sell them to a broader audience.
Mary was actually a trained psychotherapist, hence the very catchy name ‘Mary’s Gone Crackers’ - and it has stuck!
Yes I would. In fact, I joined the marketing team in 2019, and shortly before this we had performed a study with IRI about the crackers and all their attributes. ‘Crunchy’ and ‘crispy’ came out as the top two - so they definitely set us apart from others.
Our ingredients are primarily sourced with like partners; those that grow organic, gluten-free, and non-GMO products in order to meet our certification requirements.
Primarily, in the past, we always sourced our rice from California but that had to change because of the drought conditions. We use Sow Naked Oats in our new Mary’s Gone Kookies, which actually have a lower carbon footprint. We also make sure that products such as palm oil are sustainably sourced and work alongside Palm Done Right®. This is a movement that brings together manufacturers, retailers and consumers to increase awareness around the environmental and social benefits of palm grown organically, with fair-trade practices, working with small farmers around the world.
It is very important to us that we provide a healthy snack/cracker for our consumers but when we get the ingredients we want to make sure the environment has been left in a better place, and this is what our consumers expect from us in return.
We are currently expanding. While crackers are our bread and butter, we want to diversify into the snacking sector. Crackers will continue to grow as snacking becomes more popular than ever. During COVID, so many people were eating at home and the snacking trend simply soared. Crackers will definitely be an integral part of this growing snacking sector.
