Klimato’s system helps restaurants to reduce their carbon footprint in two ways. First of all, Klimato’s carbon footprint labels make it easier for consumers to make sustainable food choices from the menu. Secondly, Klimato’s platform makes it possible for chefs and menu planners to consider the carbon footprint when planning the menus and choosing whatingredi ents to use. Our customers reduced their carbon footprint by 23% on average in 2022 compared to the year before!
The food industry today accounts for one third of our global carbon footprint. Before founding Klimato, I was not aware of the large impact our current food system has on the environment nor that a lot of research and data existed on different types of food products’ climate impact.
I’ve always loved cooking and experimenting with new ingredients. After reading up on the sustainability challenges that exist in the industry, I knew I wanted to contribute to a more sustainable food system.
We have a very talented science team working with researching carbon footprint data and building our databases. The majority of our data sources are peer reviewed research papers, and we have developed a methodology for gathering and harmonizing the data to make sure that all data from Klimato is comparable. By working with third-party experts, such as the Swedish Environmental Research Institute (IVL) who have certified our methodology, our customers can feel certain that they get access to very accurate and reliable carbon footprint data through Klimato!
Carbon labeling of food is one important part in driving sustainability practices in the food industry as it educates both industry actors and consumers on different food products’ climate impact. Sustainability reporting is another important part, which helps food companies get further insights on identifying low-hanging fruits for reducing emissions and to be able to measure progress over time. Klimato provides customers with an easy-to-use reporting feature where customers can upload sales- or procurement data to generate sustainability KPIs and see their development.
One example is our collaboration with COP26 in Glasgow back in 2021 where they carbon labeled the entire menu with Klimato. The event really increased adoption of carbon labeling of menus in the UK and beyond. The initiative also got picked up by several well known and international media outlets that generated great brand awareness and helped us spread knowledge around climate impact from food and our goal of contributing to a more sustainable food system!
