Our journey towards developing Uppa was driven by our deep-rooted commitment to sustainability. We aimed to utilize more of the cocoa fruit, beyond just the bean, which led to the creation of this innovative Belgian product. The desire to reduce waste and create a more sustainable product line was a significant motivating factor in our decision-making process.
Our sustainability efforts extend to our packaging choices, where we opted for materials made from agricultural waste for our cocoa fruit bites. This decision was made in collaboration with a Dutch company, reflecting our commitment to using eco-friendly packaging solutions. By choosing agricultural waste over traditional paper packaging, we are able to minimize our environmental impact and promote sustainable practices within the chocolate industry.
Gudrun Group is a key player in the global chocolate market, primarily focusing on export and offering private label Belgian chocolates and truffles. Our approach to balancing sustainability with product innovation is multifaceted. The development of Uppa is the first evidence of our dedication to finding new ways to use byproducts and reduce waste. By combining sustainability with product innovation, we not only meet the growing demand for sustainable products but also set a benchmark for environmentally conscious practices in the chocolate industry.
Our commitment to sustainability is further highlighted by our participation in the Beyond Chocolate Charter, a program that promotes sustainable chocolate production. Our goal was not just to achieve certifications like Fairtrade or Rainforest Alliance but to go beyond and consider factors such as deforestation and farmers' minimum wage. This holistic approach to sustainability has had a significant impact on our operations. With 95% of our cocoa already certified when we signed the charter, we achieved 100% sustainable cocoa sourcing in April 2022.
Looking ahead, we aim to further enhance our sustainability efforts through our MORE program. Because we believe we can achieve more when we collaborate more with more partners. We want to inspire and motivate as many stakeholders as possible to create more impact for the planet and the generations to come. Our future plans include continued efforts to reduce waste, explore plant-based options, and develop alternative packaging solutions. Through these initiatives, we seek to set new standards for sustainability and innovation in the chocolate industry.
