Can you share your journey and what inspired you to become a Board Certified Holistic Nutritionist and Registered Herbalist, as well as an Electromagnetic Radiation Specialist (EMRS)?

I think it was the great thinker Rudolph Steiner who said that our childhood wounds become our life’s work. In my case, my dad was vice president of a sugar company! As a child, I dreamt of running my own bakery. But when I became severely ill at 26 years of age, I began to see that my food choices contributed directly to my lack of well-being. I simply wasn’t eating the real food that Nature and my body, which are intricately connected, intended, so my interest in healing with food started there and continues to evolve.

As I was healing through changes in my diet and lifestyle, I became very interested in herbs which led me to getting a Master of Science in Herbal Medicine. I had been severely injured by the medical system in my youth and using plants offered a way out of the mess of being poisoned by pharmaceutical drugs, vaccines and fear of our bodies.

I thought that my formal education would end there, but over the past few years, I realized that it’s not just what we ingest that can make us ill, but our environment as well. I began to have heart palpitations – I mean, no one wants to feel their heart, right? It took me 3 years to figure out it was my cell phone. When we eliminated that radio frequency radiation from our home, all of my heart symptoms disappeared, along with a buzzing and anxiety I felt in my body for years. I just thought it was me! It turned out to be WiFi and cell phones. That began my journey with The Building Biology Institute where my husband and I learned how to help people clean up their homes and work space of man-made electromagnetic fields, which can dramatically improve peoples’ sleep, energy levels and mental clarity.

Currently, I’m studying Germanic New Medicine with Andi Locke Mears which has opened me up to an even deeper understanding – beyond food, herbs and electromagnetic fields - of what it means to be human, fundamentally re-framing our understanding of “disease.” It’s fascinating and something everyone should take a look at.

Ultimately, our culture over emphasizes science and double-blind-placebo controlled studies as the primary way to prove what is true. Instead, I think that our personal, lived experiences (if we’re paying attention) show us The Way. At least that’s been my experience! The very thing that we’re told is anecdotal and doesn’t mean anything if it can’t be reproduced is actually THE most important thing of all.

Your practice specializes in wellness consulting and EMF solutions. How do these two areas intersect, and how can addressing EMF exposure contribute to overall well-being?

Again, our environment matters! I really like to think of everything as food – we ingest the world with our senses. We are electrical beings, particularly our brains and hearts, so it makes sense that non-native electromagnetic fields would affect us. I should point out that the term “electromagnetic field” really doesn’t mean anything on its own because there are 4 specific fields: electric fields, magnetic fields, dirty electricity, and the radio frequency radiation, or electricity in the air, that often gets peoples’ attention.

Once we become aware of this toxic input and clean up our environment, our sleep improves and we can think clearer and begin to make better decisions for ourselves in terms of how we live and what we eat. It’s all an upward spiral!

The best analogy I know of is to make your bedroom mimic camping at night. Most people know the feeling of camping and being connected to the Earth, or even when a storm comes and knocks out the electricity, it’s so quiet and that’s how we want to sleep. In our home, my husband installed a remote cut off switch, so every night before bed, I hit a button and all the non-essential breakers turn off. It was a game changer in terms of getting restorative sleep. I started dreaming again and waking up refreshed, instead of groggy.

I also made a decision to live a life without a cell phone. Yes, this is possible! I can do everything I need to do from my hard-wired computer, and Life feels like the sacred thing that it is. Instead of all these fake, superficial connections on social media, my friends and family call me on my corded landline!

So yes, to answer your question, food, herbs, and electromagnetic fields are all connected. In fact, a couple of years ago, I read this wonderful book called Electrical Nutrition where he described his Rot to Rock theory of food. The author put forth that the most electrically alive food degrades first and that’s what we need to emphasize in our diets. If you line up meat, fruit, root vegetables, grains, and a rock, they degrade in that order so eating a diet made up of animal protein, fruit and vegetables – the real foods Nature provides – begins to make good sense!

As a holistic nutritionist, what dietary approaches or principles do you find most effective in helping clients achieve their health and wellness goals?

As I outline in my book Eat in Peace to Live in Peace: Your Handbook for Vitality, I think it’s important that people fundamentally change their relationship to their bodies AND food before they start to change their diet. Once you see yourself as a worthy part of Nature, you begin to think differently about what you eat and how you live.

I also tend to align with the teachings of the Weston A Price Foundation. Weston A Price was a dentist back in the early 1900s working in Ohio who started to see the degradation of our teeth and jaw formation as it related to our increased consumption of refined foods, like sugar and white flour. He stopped practicing as a dentist and traveled the world to remote locations where people didn’t have access to our modern foods and what he documented were beautiful people with healthy teeth and wide jaws eating the foods that Nature provided AND preparing them properly. That meant soaking grains, consuming fermented foods and consuming dairy products from raw milk.

So I start there: eat the real food that Nature provides and begin to listen to your body. There is wisdom coming through our bodies that tells us what to eat if we would just learn to listen and trust.

Personally, I needed to go through a period of restriction when it came to food. I eliminated dairy (except for butter), grains, alcohol, and a number of other things, like bell peppers and garlic, that just didn’t feel good in my body. Now, with my study of Germanic New Medicine, I’m reintroducing foods that I used to enjoy like sourdough bread, sheep yogurt, raw cheese, cream and wine. It’s wonderful! Again, we are forever evolving and with diet, we want appropriate restriction and expansion.

Holistic nutrition often emphasizes the mind-body connection. How do you incorporate mindfulness and mental wellness into your nutritional counseling?

Very simply. When you eat, eat. We live in a world of distraction: turn off the TV and set down your smartphone. My invitation to people is to enjoy their food, preferably with friends and family, but if that’s not possible, light a candle and relax when you eat. This is where eating becomes a metaphor for life. Multitasking is an illusion. You can only really do one thing at a time, so in terms of living mindfully, slowing down to eat shows you how to live – one bite at a time, no matter what you’re doing.

In the end, the mind and body are One. There is no distinction between the two. When I first made changes to my diet, I would simply ask my body what it wanted me to eat. I’d ask my body, “How can I honor you?” And I’d get images of different foods, like asparagus or steak or a bowl of berries, and that’s how I would shop at the store. At the beginning, I didn’t even really know how to cook a meal. I could bake! But cook? Nope. I had to learn. But once I started talking and listening to my body, that quiet voice within got louder and louder and I became increasingly confident in that part of myself that was still connected to Nature. Just remember that your body knows more than you do!

As someone deeply involved in holistic health and EMF awareness, what trends or developments do you foresee in the field of wellness consulting and electromagnetic radiation protection in the coming years?

No matter what it’s always back to the basics and using Nature as our guide. I think that people will continue to wake up, reject lab-made foods like manufactured meats, along with all this plant-based nonsense, and re-establish connections with local farmers. We will also begin to see the buildings we live in as actual living entities – as our 3rd skin – and we’ll build structures in healthier ways that don’t grow toxic mold or pollute the air with radiofrequency radiation.

And the more I study Germanic New Medicine, the more I see it as a cutting-edge tool to be used in every household. Pharmaceutical drugs don’t support health, and the diagnosis of “disease” very often creates more and more disease! Sure, the drugs may eliminate a symptom, but that symptom is your teacher. It’s trying to show you something and Germanic New Medicine goes a long way to help us decipher the symptom’s meaning. Only then can we begin to lose the fear of our bodies and disease and live into a wonderful future that we all know is possible – one person and family at a time.
