The story behind the inception of Black Drip Coffee is one of passion, culture, and a desire to create a space that celebrates both the art of coffee and the richness of Black culture. It began with the vision of two entrepreneurs, Charon Thompson and Dan Smith, who shared a deep appreciation for coffee one late night of working for our non-profit, The Porter House KC. We were drinking coffee and the idea of why not “us” to start a coffee business. It started with me buying whole green beans from out of the country. The concept of fresh-roasted coffee was terrific. Quickly we learned that roasting coffee smells like burnt popcorn.
So, after getting in trouble for roasting coffee at home we decided to go a different route by contacting someone who knew about coffee. I contacted Messenger Coffee Co. Issac Hodges, who said they would help us with the coffee process. From there, we came up with our first bag called Renegade. We knew this coffee would translate to a community looking for an exceptional taste and a tremendous wake-me-up type of coffee. We grew up in neighborhoods where coffee was not just a beverage but a social ritual—a way to gather, connect, and engage in meaningful conversations in the morning; instead, whether it's at McDonalds or just at work.
We both recognized the lack of representation and visibility of Black culture within the coffee industry, which inspired us to embark on a journey to merge the worlds of coffee and Black culture. We believe that coffee, much like art, music, and literature, has the power to transcend boundaries and create connections. We saw an opportunity to make a coffee brand that not only provided exceptional quality but also celebrated the diverse contributions of Black people to the world of coffee, both historically and in the present day. Black Drip Coffee quickly gained traction and support, not only from coffee enthusiasts but also from individuals who appreciated the brand's commitment to celebrating Black culture. We recognize the importance of education and community engagement, so we exclusively are at Black-owned establishments. We inspired others to embrace the fusion of culture, entrepreneurship, and passion. It serves as a testament to the power of representation, authenticity, and the impact that a business can have when it purposefully merges different worlds to create something exceptional.
By infusing hip-hop, rap, fashion, sports, and history into its brand identity, Black Drip Coffee creates a multi-dimensional and immersive customer experience. It goes beyond serving great coffee; it becomes a cultural hub that reflects the diverse interests and passions of its target audience. The brand's commitment to embracing these influences fosters a deep connection with customers, establishing Black Drip Coffee as more than just a cup of coffee—it becomes a destination where people can come together to celebrate and engage with Black culture in all its forms within a cup.
