Bigdelivery 2024 Meat at your door the way you want it

Like in Argentina and Uruguay, Brazil also has a passion for barbecue, with special cuts and side dishes, that is starting to gain its own space with worldwide chains.

In Salvador, capital of the fourth biggest state in Brazil (Bahia), a butcher shop decided to transform their business and invest in an online presence. Bigdelivery was born focusing on quick deliveries, personalization and great products. Check out this interview for DeliveryRank with Daniel Cirilo, COO at Bigdelivery, to know more about that idea and the challenges faced.

Please present Bigdelivery to our audience

Bigdelivery is an online butcher service that specializes at delivering fresh meat directly to its customers.

How was that turning point, from working with a traditional physical store to going online. Did you notice some pushback and growing pains?

Bigdelivery started as the delivery branch of Frigorífico do Mané, a large butcher shop chain in our region. However, we have spun off into a separate business entity that follows the startup motto of build-measure-learn to continuously reinvent ourselves to provide our customers the best possible service and products.

Despite having a strong household name association, in the beginning it was hard to reach mass appeal. Many customers resisted the idea of ordering meat without being able to choose the products themselves. However, since we have very high standards on the items we deliver, the word of mouth trust started to spread and the acceptance and search for our services increased over time.

Did your sales suffer in the beginning of the transition, or the process went smoothly and with early results?

We treated the delivery service as a separate company from the beginning and scaled it as if we had just started a new company. We saw a slow but constant growth since the beginning which sped up as we better understood our market and more people became acquainted with our services.

What are your best-selling products?

We offer over 400 meat products and many variations thereof. Different customers have preferences for different products. However, we see a large focus on barbecue related items.

What is your competition in Salvador? It still is the traditional meat places or there are ideas like yours battling for market share?

We compete with traditional butcher shops, grocery stores and other delivery services. However, Bigdelivery is unique in the level of personalization, the ease of purchasing and level of customer support we offer. If a customer wants fresh (not frozen) File Mignon cut into half inch cubs (~1 centimeter) and packaged in 1 pound (500g) vacuum sealed bags delivered to their house the morning of the next day we can do it. Not many places are able to service at this level.

How can you preserve your product from your storage to the client’s door?

We have a direct supplier that ships us products daily. Upon arrival, products are stored in refrigerated chambers and taken out for preparation in a temperature controlled facility. Once ready, orders are placed in a refrigerated chamber where they await pickup from a driver. All our vehicles have insulated containers for transporting our products and orders that leave the facility are surrounded by ice-cold gel packs.

Do you have plans to expand to other states in Brazil or even the whole country?

For sure! We are already planning on expanding our distribution center in Salvador and we have started to study the viability of opening up in order cities around Brazil. We receive thousands of requests from customers all around Brazil asking when we will open up in their area and we believe it is just a matter of time.
