Using a holistic approach means looking at every aspect of our clients lives and health. From daily activities, family life, work, underlying health issues (chronic and acute), sleep patterns, mental health, short and long term goals and more. We take a deep dive into their labs and view our clients from the inside, as well as out, and use the knowledge we gain on our clients along with the data provided to see a complete picture of their health. Each client has a different starting point and different path.
As I mentioned, each client is unique. We analyze their life from when they wake up until when they go to bed including schedule, lifestyle and overall health. We run individualized labs specific to each client’s needs and goals. We then create a plan that they are able to execute and can receive the best results based on the time they can dedicate to their nutrition practices and willingness to change. Collecting all of these variables we create a custom plan to get optimal results for each person.
Functional Sports Nutrition means that we are root cause based. We look to see if there are any elements that are hindering performance and will find the root cause of that and address it there rather than mask it. Some examples are gut health where that can affect overall inflammation and lung capacity as well as interfere with practice, gameplay and mental health. We will use in-depth questioning of health history and labs if necessary but we can create a rather comprehensive plan based on biofeedback from the athlete.
Once we find the root cause and implement the plan we have to consider their schedule and ability to execute. Some factors we think about is if they are in season or out of season, if they have games, if they are traveling and how our protocol can fit in with their athletic schedule.
As far as nutrient timing, this is something that we use with every athlete to optimize their performance and recovery. Our strategies for nutrient timing will depend on the athlete and sport, as well the intensity of practice or play, frequency of gameplay, travel logistics and availability of resources.
Some of the major challenges when working with professional athletes are the frequency of practice and games, the frequency of travel and the availability of the athlete. Nutrition is usually one of the last priorities because coaching physical therapy rehab media and many other areas come before us.
We have learned to utilize small pockets of time to maximize implementing our strategies with our athletes. Some people do prioritize nutrition and those will get the best results but we also have to work with what we are given. What many people don't realize is that nutrition is the most adaptable of all areas in sports performance due to our priorities being last in order of importance to most teams or programs.
Our methods aren’t a crash diet and don’t eliminate foods. We teach people how to eat for a lifetime. We educate them on the actual basics behind understanding nutrition which is macronutrients. We also teach them how to eat for travel, dining out, eating with friends. We prepare them for real life situations and change the mindset of our clients to lifestyle rather than diet.
