I think the idea of establishing Kelly’s Choice had always been in the back of my mind. My Aunt Melissa was a dietitian who ignited the spark within me when I was a little girl. I aspired to follow in her footsteps. In 2012, I was a single mom, raising my two girls, Ellie and Livi, and I wanted them to see that women can be successful entrepreneurs—that women can achieve their dreams!
I founded Kelly's Choice with a simple yet profound motto: "real people, promoting real food." At Kelly's Choice, we don't just prescribe diets; we empower individuals with lasting lifestyle changes.
What started as a one-woman show has now blossomed into a team of 20 dedicated dietitians, united by the common goal of transforming lives through nutrition. Our journey has led us to diverse avenues, each offering unique opportunities to enhance population health.
My practice has evolved from a private practice in Skaneateles, NY to offering private practice and workplace wellness all over the country! And I also have frequent speaking engagements, educating my peers. Additionally, I am the spokesperson for some of my favorite food brands!
The integration of the three prongs of my business (private practice, workplace wellness, brand partnerships) is all about making as much of an impact on population health as possible. I call it braiding—they all feed into each other. This integrated strategy ensures we connect with individuals through various channels, meeting them at different points in their wellness journey and creating a meaningful, far-reaching impact on their lives.
We have been making an imprint on the importance of nutrition in the medical world. Most of our private practice referrals come from doctors and hospital systems. The remarkable successes achieved by our patients have left a profound impression on medical professionals, leading many to wholeheartedly believe that nutrition education stands out as the most important intervention for enhancing health.
We are constantly doing research on innovations in nutrition. We meet with nutrition research professors regularly to continue learning.
For example, Dr. Voss, a Nutrition and Food Studies professor at Syracuse University, has worked with us a lot on understanding gut health. She had an amazing analogy to describe the role of the mucosa layer in the gut. She refers to it as the house for all your bacteria. Fiber builds this house. If there is no house for the bacteria, your bacteria will seep out because it has nowhere to go. This causes leaky gut syndrome, which leads to massive inflammation—the precursor to most chronic diseases.
When we learn analogies like this, we can pass them on to our patients so that they better understand the role nutrition plays in their health.
So many people believe that to be healthy, you need to diet. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! At Kelly’s Choice, we teach people how to make better choices, how to build healthy habits and why. For example, many of my patients come to me having tried Atkins, South Beach. Keto, or another high-protein diet. Yes, protein is important for your muscles and blood, but carbohydrates are just as important---when you choose the right carbohydrates that are rich in fiber, you feel satisfied, lose weight and drastically reduce your risk of chronic conditions like heart disease.
We are currently growing our group and hope to have over 200 dietitians across the country working for Kelly’s Choice. I also have dozens of speaking engagements booked across the country! I truly believe Kelly’s Choice is about to shake things up in the health and wellness scene. We're not just about nutrition – we're here to make healthy living down-to-earth and accessible. Whether it's one-on-one counseling, workplace wellness, webinars, or teaming up with cool brands, we're on a mission to change the game and help folks everywhere live their healthiest, happiest lives.
