Hatten Wines was founded and started in 1994, from Bali local and wine lover Ida Bagus Rai Budarsa. Beginning with a single product, a rosé made from Bali’s heritage grape variety, Alphonse Lavallée, his goal was to put local wine on the global map. With a vision to overcome the challenges of tropical grape cultivation. The founder was inspired by the island’s unique terroir, and they embraced innovative viticultural practices to adapt to the climate, such as high-altitude vineyards and unique grape varieties.
What truly sets Hatten Wines apart from wines produced in more traditional grape-growing regions is the unmistakable character infused by Bali’s unique environment. The volcanic soil imparts a mineral-rich quality to the grapes, while the tropical sun, tempered by cooling ocean breezes, ensures optimal ripening and fruit development. These factors combine to create a flavor profile and aroma that are distinctly Balinese.
Roughly 8° south of the equator, Bali is a low-latitude region with a consistently hot and humid climate. As a result, our vines are evergreen and produce up to two or maximum three times harvest per year. We grow both indigenous and international grape varieties in our North Bali vineyards and believe our rich, volcanic soils add character and complexity to our wines.
Our winemaking team skillfully harnesses these elements, crafting wines that capture the essence of Bali’s terroir. The result is a range of wines with flavors and aromas that can’t be replicated elsewhere. Hatten Wines provides a taste of Bali’s extraordinary landscape and climate, making it a sought-after choice for those looking to explore wines with a sense of place.
The vibrant culture and bustling tourism industry of Bali have been integral to shaping the identity and marketing of Hatten Wines. We take pride in being ambassadors of Balinese culture through our wines. Our labels feature Balinese artistry and cultural richness, connecting our products with the island’s heritage.
Furthermore, we actively engage with the tourism industry by promoting wine as an essential part of the Bali experience. Our vineyard tours and tastings session offer tourists an opportunity to explore the world of award winning Balinese wine. This symbiotic relationship between Hatten Wines and Bali’s culture and tourism industry has made our wines not just beverages but also cultural ambassadors of the island.
Hatten Wines is a perfect complement to the rich and diverse flavors of Balinese cuisine. We have meticulously curated our wine portfolio to provide a broad spectrum of choices, from crisp and refreshing whites to robust and full-bodied reds. Each wine is carefully crafted to harmonize with the complex flavors found in especially Balinese and/or Asian dishes, enhancing the dining experience.
Our wines serve as palate cleansers, elevating the dining experience by cutting through the spiciness and richness of mostly Balinese and/or Asian flavors. They provide a refreshing contrast and create delightful combinations that captivate the taste buds. Beyond Bali, our wines are versatile partners for a wide range of cuisines, making them an excellent choice for wine enthusiasts around the world.
Hatten Wines has been a trailblazer in the development of Bali’s wine culture. We have introduced locals and tourists alike to the world of quality wines, fostering an appreciation for this beverage. Our vineyard and winery tours, tastings, and events have become integral parts of Bali’s cultural landscape.
The success of Hatten Wines has paved the way for other wineries to explore and invest in the region. We anticipate an expansion of vineyards, experimentation with unique grape varieties, and further refinement of viticultural practices. As wine production in the Asian tropics matures, we hope to see it become a respected and celebrated part of the global wine industry, with Bali and the surrounding regions at the forefront of this exciting journey.
